Description

This railroad track runs just behind my house. This shot was taken using a Sony ND8 filter and my brand new Hoya R72 Infrared filter. Levels adjusted in Photoshop for additional contrast. I also added a touch of blue-gray to the sky.

Camera: Sony DSC F717
Mode: Nighshot
Shutter: 1/30 sec
Aperture: F/2
ISO: 120
Metering: Center-Weighted Average

Thanks for viewing. C/C welcome.

There is some spooky feeling in this photo. I guess I have made some influence on you in buying IR filter ;) This photo has really some chaotic and spooky feeling, try using lower NDs cause your timing was 1/30, you will eventually get shaked photo cause of slow times.

Great work, Robert.

@sdavis75: Yes, Sony F717 is great camera for IR, but sadly they crippled it by using 1/8-1/60sec@F2.0-3.0 in Nightshotmode.

@Tommy: One of my favorite movies, as a matter of fact. Don't worry though; this track has been abandoned for years.

Steven, what would the effect on this photo have been if you DIDN'T use an ND filter? How would the inversion look? I'm curious because I have a 3 stop ND filter for my 18-70 67mm and would like to invest in an IR filter as well. You all have inspired me to look further into this...thanks!

I JUST LOVE IT!!

Avatar RobertVovk

 05/18/06 @775

Tommy, ND is used for decreasing light. You wouldn't need them, if Sony haven't crippled this fine camera by using fixed exposure times in Nightshotmode. Nightshotmode moves hotmirror away from sensor, so all IR light falls onto sensor and cause of fixed exposure times you need to use NDs, I am using 8*,4* and 2* times (6 Stops in bright day).

Really nice shot. I love the effect IR has on certain subjects. It definitely elevated this shot above the kind of standard "down the rail" shots that almost everyone takes at one time or another. I'm not crazy about the angle, but I understand why you've done it that way. Values look excellent. Nice work (thumbup)

love the tilted perspective and the whole spooky atmosphere you`ve also created through the tones. it somehow reminds me of old mystic western stories. i see that we`re using the same cam. good choice ;)
perhaps i would adjust the levels a bit more to get more high tones of it and rise the contrast that way, but its nonetheless the favourite of your gallery so far
9/9

Avatar metapuppet

 05/23/06 @694

not sure if the clouds and the titl add to this but the splittone in combination with the ir makes a funky appearance. as a whole very very nice environment. maybe it lacks a main object.. will have a second look;)

*edit: thy pylons, trees and the hut work great contrasting the tracks, formally. but the sky might fit better if either keept rougher or smoother imo.. or as mentioned a central element is missing....
the tilt works! but doesn't work concerning the pylons i think but works good on the tracks and the trees. compositional-wise(thumbup) good tones in the clouds
the almost graphical feel in the foreground looks funky, too ,)

great scene, wrong weather (especially for a sony).
the ghostly feeling has a certain appeal, but maybe the pic would gain from more solar activity? revisit the scene, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease! *puppy eyes*
